Article 4 Directions are often used to protect the character and appearance of conservation areas, and they enable the Council to remove certain permitted development rights for an area. Permission will be required for certain types of work, which would otherwise be permitted, for example, alterations to windows, doors, roofs, painting/rendering of the exterior of properties or alterations to boundary walls etc. may be restricted by an Article 4 Direction.
