PROJECT DETAILS ONLY - NO DATA. Modelling of flow and transport in fractured rock is severely restricted due to the need to represent fractures over a wide range of scales, which demands unrealistically large computer resources. Recently, closely related problems have been studied by mathematicians who have sought, for example, to define a Laplacian for systems with fractal structure. This project aims to combine the hydrogeological need with those mathematical advances. It will develop and test novel numerical methods for modelling flow and transport fractured rock exhibiting heterogeneity and connectivity at multiple scales. The project has strong potential to establish bridgeheads between a variety of theoretical developments and hydrogeological observations.
