Settlement grid references are created and maintained by National Records of Scotland (NRS). Grid references are calculated based on the population of the postcodes within the settlement, while ensuring that the centroid is located inside the boundary. Further details on settlements and localities, including the methodology, can be found in the Special Area Population Estimates: Settlements and Localities section of the NRS website.
